Patanjali flour found to contain pesticides, ordered to be recalled; stock plummets

Patanjali Shares: Shares of Baba Ramdev's company, Patanjali Foods, are seeing a sharp decline today, July 27. This decline in shares came after a court order ordered the company to recall a shipment of wheat flour.

An inspection by the Kottayam Food Safety Authority in Kerala found traces of the pesticide chlorpyrifos in the flour batch well above the legal limit. The company stated in an exchange filing on July 24 that food safety officials found residues of the pesticide above the permissible limit in a batch of wheat flour, following which Patanjali Foods was directed to recall the batch.

Patanjali Foods said it received a recall order for a batch of wheat flour from the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety in Kottayam, Kerala. The company stated that it received the recall order, dated July 20, on July 24. The company also stated that the issue pertains to a specific batch of wheat flour and does not affect the company's other products.

What is chlorpyrifos?

It is an organophosphate insecticide used to kill insects in crops. Excessive amounts of it in food can cause neurological problems. Excessive consumption can also lead to dizziness, headaches, and stomach upset.

Following this news, Patanjali Foods shares fell from their level of Rs 552 to now trading around Rs 344 per share. This means the share price has fallen by Rs 208.55. This means the stock has fallen by 37.74% from its high level. Its 52-week low is Rs 328.20. This means the stock is currently very close to its low level.
