Indian athletes showered gold medals on the third day of the Asian Athletics Championship 2025 being held in Gumi, South Korea. India won 3 gold medals in a single day. Currently, India is in second place after China with 14 medals, which has a total of 21 medals including 12 gold.

The country's fastest female hurdler Jyoti Yaraji, steeplechase runner Avinash Sable and India's 4x400 meter women's relay team performed brilliantly and finished first in their respective races. After Jyoti and Sable, Jisna Mathew, Rupal Chaudhary, Kunja Rajita and Subha Venkatesan of the relay team together won gold for India. These 6 Indian athletes also broke many old records.

 

Record breaking performance of Indian athletes

Avinash Sable started the gold medal winning spree on the third day. He performed brilliantly in the steeplechase event and completed the race in 8:20.92 seconds and won the gold. Sable said after the victory, "I was confident of winning the gold medal because I was the best in this field." Sable has become the first Indian man to win gold in steeplechase in the Asian Championships in the last 36 years. India last won gold in this event in 1989, when Dina Ram achieved this feat. In 1975, Harbel Singh became the first Indian to win gold in steeplechase.

 

 

After Avinash Sable, Jyoti Yaraji won the gold medal by completing the 100 meter hurdle race in just 12.96 seconds. With this, she broke the 27-year-old record of this championship. Her previous record was 12.99 seconds. After winning the gold, she said, "It was a good day. I am happy to break the 13-second barrier this season." Not only this, Jyoti has also joined the select club of five athletes who defended the gold medal in the 100 meter hurdle race of the Asian Championship.

 

Before Jyoti, Japan's Emi Akimoto (1979, 1981, 1983), China's Zhang Yu (1991, 1993), China's Su Yinpi (2003, 2005) and China's athlete Sun Yawei (2009, 2011) have defended their gold medals. Let us tell you that in its last edition i.e. in 2023, Jyoti won the gold medal by completing the race in 13.09 seconds. But her personal best time is 12.78 seconds, which is also a national record.

The relay team ended the wait of 12 years

After the feats of Jyoti and Sable, India's 4x400m women's relay team performed brilliantly. The quartet of Jisna Mathew, Rupal Chaudhary, Kunja Rajita and Subha Venkatesan scored a hat-trick of gold for India. With this, these 4 Indian athletes ended the 12-year wait for a gold medal. The Indian women's relay team defeated Vietnam in the final by completing the race in 3:34.18 seconds.

 

In the Asian Athletics Championship 2025, India won 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal on 29 May. With this, the total number of medals in this competition has gone up to 14. India is currently in second place after China, which has a total of 21 medals including 12 gold medals.
