PM Modi's 75th Birthday: After major victories in 2014 and 2019, the BJP's performance in Uttar Pradesh plummeted in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, narrowly missing out on just 33 seats.

Born in Gujarat, Narendra Damodar Das Modi is not only the current Prime Minister of India, but also the biggest face of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a glimpse of this was seen as early as 2014. While serving as Chief Minister of Gujarat, he contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, and his subsequent election as Prime Minister of India proved to be a historic turning point for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.
Modi's connection to Uttar Pradesh was a game-changer for the BJP in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The Modi wave helped the BJP win 71 out of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh. While the BJP had won only 10 seats in 2009, in the 2014 elections, not only did the BJP win seats, but its vote share also increased from 15% to nearly 43%.
Modi's magic was also seen in the 2017 and 2022 assembly elections.
Following the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 312 seats in the 2017 UP Assembly elections, forming its government in the state. This victory was a major victory for the BJP over the Samajwadi Party and Congress alliance at the time. Subsequently, the BJP maintained its dominance in UP, winning 62 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and 255 seats in the 2022 Assembly elections. Following the Modi wave, the new politics of Hindutva benefited the BJP in several states, and the party subsequently formed governments in several states.
BJP's graph fell in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections
After major victories in 2014 and 2019, the BJP's performance in Uttar Pradesh declined significantly in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In this election, the BJP was reduced to just 33 seats, while the SP-Congress alliance won 43. However, after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, by-elections were held for nine assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, of which the BJP won six, the SP two, and the RLD one.
