The Indian Premier League 2025 is back in action from Saturday, May 17, after a week-long suspension due to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. The league resumes with a crucial clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), marking the 58th match of the season. While the focus is back on the cricket field, controversy has erupted off the pitch, putting the BCCI in the middle of a heated backlash.
Kolkata cricket fans are furious over the BCCI’s alleged decision to shift the final match of the tournament from Eden Gardens, Kolkata, to another city. Their anger led to a protest staged outside the iconic stadium on Friday, May 16.
Fans Demand Final Be Held in Kolkata as Originally Planned
The IPL 2025 final was initially scheduled to be held at Eden Gardens on May 25. However, due to the military tensions and the resulting suspension of matches, the schedule had to be revised. With the league resuming from May 17, the final is now expected to take place on June 3.
Reports suggest that the final may be moved to Ahmedabad, with the Narendra Modi Stadium likely to host both Qualifier 2 and the title clash. This news has not gone down well with the cricket-loving public in Kolkata, who feel robbed of the opportunity to witness the season's biggest match on their home turf.
On May 16, a large group of local fans gathered outside Eden Gardens, raising slogans and demanding that the BCCI stick to the original plan. Many held placards asking for the final to remain in Kolkata and accused the board of unfairly sidelining their city. The video of this protest is now going viral on social media, sparking a wider debate among fans across India.
Why Was the Venue Changed?
According to reports, the BCCI decided to revise the playoff venues due to the disruption caused by “Operation Sindoor,” which had led to a temporary halt of the tournament. After a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, the BCCI announced the revised IPL schedule on May 12.
Though the matches are set to resume, sources claim that the BCCI is now leaning towards Ahmedabad to host the final due to logistical convenience and security considerations. However, this has not been officially confirmed yet.
Ahmedabad Likely to Host Final and Qualifier 2
If reports are to be believed, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will now host both the Qualifier 2 on June 1 and the final on June 3. This massive stadium, which has a seating capacity of over 1 lakh, is also considered one of the most secure and modern venues in the country.
Still, many are questioning why Kolkata was dropped from hosting duties, especially after having been assigned the final earlier in the season. Fans argue that Eden Gardens, one of the most historic venues in the country, deserves to host such a prestigious match.
Final Decision Awaits Official Confirmation
As of now, the BCCI has not officially announced the new venue for the IPL 2025 final. Fans in Kolkata are still hopeful that the board might reconsider its decision, especially after the protests and public pressure. However, with time running out and logistics being finalized, it remains to be seen whether the iconic Eden Gardens will get its chance to host the finale or not.
Regardless of where the final is held, the controversy has already stirred significant discontent among cricket fans, highlighting the emotional and cultural value stadiums like Eden Gardens hold in Indian cricket.
