Team India is set to tour England for a five-match Test series, and the BCCI is expected to announce the squad soon. However, ahead of the official announcement, there’s already a major development. As per media reports, Arshdeep Singh, who has been in stellar form during IPL 2025, is likely to be included in the Test squad. Impressed by his performance, the Indian selectors have reportedly asked him to stay prepared for the England series. Having already represented India in T20Is and ODIs, Arshdeep could now be on the verge of making his Test debut. His exceptional bowling has been instrumental in helping Punjab Kings reach the playoffs for the first time in 11 years.
Will IPL Form Influence Test Selections?
Before the senior team heads to England, India A is scheduled to play practice matches there. Interestingly, Arshdeep is not part of that squad. Sources suggest this may be due to Punjab Kings’ progression to the IPL 2025 playoffs, which might have prevented his availability. Nevertheless, Arshdeep has been a consistent presence in India’s white-ball teams. Known for his precise line, length, and ability to swing the ball, he has delivered strong performances in major ICC tournaments such as the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. His current IPL form further underlines his readiness for the red-ball format.
In IPL 2025, Arshdeep has claimed 16 wickets in 12 matches at an impressive average of 21.93. According to a report in The Telegraph, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has spoken to the left-arm pacer and asked him to be ready for the high-profile tour beginning next month. The selectors view Arshdeep as a key option to add variety to India’s pace attack, particularly due to his ability to swing the Dukes ball both ways—a crucial skill for English conditions.
Strong Credentials in English Conditions
While Arshdeep has not yet debuted in Test cricket, he has been honing his red-ball skills through domestic cricket in India. Notably, he had a successful stint with Kent in the County Championship last year, where he picked up 13 wickets in five matches, bowling 161.4 overs. This experience has given him valuable exposure to English conditions and shown he can perform in the longer format as well.
