Food Safety Rules India
Health News India: Nowadays, people are using various health drinks and special water to keep themselves fit and healthy. One of these is "alkaline water," which is sold as beneficial for the body. However, a news report from Gujarat has increased people's concern. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken major action after finding fulvic acid and black particles in a company's alkaline water in Gujarat. It was reported that stock worth approximately Rs 31.61 lakh has been seized. After this news, people want to know what fulvic acid is and how much harm it can cause to the body.
What was found in the investigation?
According to the report, this case is located in the Savli area of Vadodara district in Gujarat. FSSAI received a consumer complaint, prompting an inspection of the company's plant. During the inspection, officials found black particles in the water bottles. Additionally, several important pieces of information were missing from the packaging. Lab tests also revealed that the water contained fulvic acid, which is not permitted for use in packaged drinking water according to current regulations. FSSAI further stated that formal proceedings have been initiated under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006. Following this, officials have intensified their action against the company.
What is fulvic acid?
Fulvic acid is considered a natural compound found in soil, plants, and certain minerals. It's also used as a health supplement in many places. It's claimed to provide minerals and boost energy, but experts say any substance is only considered safe to use in prescribed quantities and after proper testing. If it's added to food or beverages without authorization or improperly, it can be harmful to health. For this reason, the FSSAI has prohibited it from being used in packaged water.
What do Indian rules say about packaged water?
Under Indian law, any product sold as packaged drinking water must comply with regulations set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Standards such as IS 14543 for packaged drinking water and IS 13428 for packaged mineral water apply. These regulations prohibit the presence of any suspended particles, sediment, or unauthorized substances in water. This is why the presence of black particles and fulvic acid in the water is considered a serious matter. This controversy has emerged at a time when alkaline and mineral-rich water is becoming increasingly popular among urban residents and is being marketed as healthier than plain water.
Which diseases can increase the risk?
According to doctors, adding unknown or unauthorized substances to water or food can cause stomach problems, including vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, stomach aches, and allergic reactions. Long-term exposure to such substances can also affect the liver and kidneys. Therefore, experts recommend checking the quality and authenticity of any health product before purchasing it.
Be careful while buying health products.
This case also serves as a valuable lesson for people. Many products are being sold in the market today, touted as "healthy" and "fitness-friendly." However, not everything that glitters is necessarily safe. Experts advise that before purchasing any packaged water or health drink, one must read its labeling, FSSAI license, and ingredient information. Furthermore, if the water's color, taste, or smell appears unusual, its use should be discontinued immediately. This case from Gujarat reminds us once again that even a little carelessness in matters related to health can cause significant harm.
