The final of the 2026 Duleep Trophy is being played between East Zone and South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The pitch appeared flat in the first innings, with East Zone scoring 708/10. However, Mohammed Shami's brilliance was evident on this very flat pitch. Shami, playing for East Zone, bowled brilliantly on the third day of the match.

East Zone batted on the first two days of the match. South Zone came out to bat on the third day. It was during this period that Shami wreaked havoc. He bowled 11 overs by the end of the day, including four maidens. He conceded just 17 runs during this period. He also took two wickets. While South Zone's bowlers struggled on the Chepauk pitch, Shami troubled the batsmen with his golden arm.

At the end of the third day, South Zone scored 242 runs for 6 wickets. Captain Tilak Varma remained unbeaten on 56 and Chama V. Milind remained unbeaten on 2. Meanwhile, Devdutt Padikkal played the team's highest innings so far, scoring 62 runs, which included 4 fours. With this, the team trails by 466 runs. Shami continues his impressive bowling in the Duleep Trophy

Shami has been consistently bowling superbly throughout the tournament. In the semi-final against Central Zone, Shami took five wickets. He took two wickets in the first innings and three in the second.

Following this performance, discussions have once again intensified about bringing Shami back into Team India. He last played for India in the 2025 Champions Trophy final. His last Test match was in June 2023. It will be interesting to see whether Shami will return to Team India.
