Glycemic Load in Diabetes: Diabetes has become a big problem for people all over the world as well as in India. Often people think that they have diabetes due to eating too much sweets . To cure this, they stop eating and drinking sweets. But just giving up sweets or eating less is not a cure for diabetes. You also have to pay attention to both the glycemic index and glycemic load of the food.
It is important to pay attention to diet
It is very important to have a balanced and healthy diet to cure diabetes.
To cure diabetes, it is very important that you take a balanced and healthy diet. Include such things in your diet which do not increase the blood sugar level. Generally people believe that only eating sweets increases blood sugar. But in reality, every food with high glycemic index and high glycemic load can be harmful for diabetes patients. The worrying thing is that most people do not pay attention to both of these.
This is more dangerous than sugar
Neurologist Dr. Priyanka Sahrawat recently posted a video to tell people about high glycemic index and high glycemic load. In this video, the doctor has also explained the difference between the two. Dr. Sahrawat said that it is more important to stay away from food with high glycemic load than to give up sugar and sweets.
Know the big difference between the two
High glycemic index is called GE and high glycemic load is called GL. Both of these indicate food and blood sugar level. However, GE only measures the ability of carbohydrates to increase blood sugar level. On the other hand, GL tells how long your blood sugar level remained high. Food with high glycemic index increases blood sugar immediately. But food with high glycemic load keeps the sugar level in the blood increased for a long time. In such a situation, it is clear that food with high glycemic load affects you for a longer time.
How to identify high glycemic load
Dr. Saharawat said that all the things which have a glycemic index of more than 70 come under the category of high glycemic index. On the other hand, the things whose glycemic load is 20 or more come under the category of high glycemic load. These increase blood sugar rapidly and this spike remains for a long time. This can cause many problems.
Eat this wisely
White rice, white bread, refined flour food, packaged food, processed food, soft drinks, potatoes, sweet potatoes etc. have a very high glycemic load. Bakery items like cakes, pastries, cookies etc. also have high GL. Therefore, people with diabetes should always consume them in limited quantities. Too much fried or spicy food can also cause problems.
Do fruits also increase problems
On the other hand, watermelon and banana have a high glycemic index, but the load is low. In such a situation, eating them will increase your blood sugar immediately. But it will also decrease very quickly. People suffering from pre-diabetes should not consume them more than twice a week. Pineapple and mango also have a high glycemic load. Its consumption should also be reduced in diabetes.
