Pancreatic Cancer Patients: The biggest challenge of pancreatic cancer is that, in most patients, the disease is detected when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.

New Pill For Pancreatic Cancer Treatment: Pancreatic cancer is considered one of the deadliest cancers in the world. Its biggest challenge is that most patients are diagnosed only after the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. This limits treatment options and reduces the patient's chances of survival. But now a new pill has brought a new ray of hope among doctors and scientists. The results of a recent clinical trial have indicated that this drug could bring a major change in the treatment of pancreatic cancer.
Which medicine is effective?
According to research presented at the world's largest cancer conference, a drug called daroxonasib nearly doubled the survival time for patients with advanced-stage pancreatic cancer. The trial included 500 patients whose cancer had spread throughout the body. Researchers found that patients taking the pill lived an average of 13.2 months, while those receiving chemotherapy had an average survival of 6.6 to 6.7 months.
The study was presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual meeting in Chicago. Research from the world-renowned Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston led the trial. The results have been hailed by cancer experts as one of the most significant achievements in decades.
The drug could be a game changer
Dr. Rachna Shroff, chief of the Division of Oncology at the University of Arizona Cancer Center and ASCO's gastrointestinal cancer expert, said these results could be game-changing for cancer treatment. According to Dr. Rachna Shroff, she has treated patients with pancreatic cancer for 16 years, but the results of this study left her emotional. She said such a survival benefit had never been seen before. Dr. Julie Gralow, ASCO's chief medical officer and executive vice president, also called the drug a game-changer. She said it's not just a breakthrough, but a major achievement in cancer research.
How is this medicine made?
The drug daroxonasib targets a protein called KRAS, which is believed to be responsible for the growth of cancer cells in most pancreatic cancer cases. Researchers have found that over 90 percent of patients have a mutation in the KRAS gene. By blocking this process, the drug slows cancer growth.
Patients can get relief
Paula Hanford, Chief Executive Officer of UK-based Pancreatic Cancer Action, and Anna Jewell, Director of Research and Innovation at Pancreatic Cancer UK, also called these results extremely encouraging. Experts believe that if further trials are successful and the drug becomes widely available, pancreatic cancer patients could have the opportunity to spend more time with their families. This is why this new pill is being considered a potential game-changer in pancreatic cancer treatment.
