China Brain Chip Implant: China has taken the lead in brain chip implantation. According to reports, doctors in Shanghai have implanted the first commercially available brain-computer interface (BCI) into a patient's brain. The patient suffered a spinal cord injury and, with the chip's help, is now able to move his hands. With this, brain chips have now moved out of clinical trials and are being used in the real world. American businessman Elon Musk's company, Neuralink, is also developing a brain chip, which is currently in the trial phase.
Surgery in Shanghai
According to media reports, the surgery to implant this chip was performed at Huashan Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai. The patient who received the chip had been in a car accident nearly a decade ago. A spinal cord injury had left his hands numb. A team of doctors has now implanted a brain-computer interface (brain chip) called the Neural Electronic Opportunity (NEO) into his brain. The patient's condition is reportedly stable after the surgery, and tests have shown that the chip is capturing high-quality brain signals.
What is the NEO system?
This brain chip, called NEO, was developed by Neuracle Technology in collaboration with Tsinghua University. It's designed to help paralyzed patients regain their ability to walk. It was approved for commercial use in March. It's a coin-sized device that's placed on the surface of the brain. It captures signals from the brain and converts them into commands for external devices. When a patient thinks of moving their hand, the device will capture that signal and send it to a computer, which will then command a robotic glove. This way, even people with mobility impairments will be able to perform some of their daily tasks.
Neuralink is also conducting trials
Elon Musk's company, Neuralink, is also working on a similar technology. Several patients have been implanted with the Neuralink chip as part of clinical trials. This chip, named Telepathy, allows patients to control smartphones, computers, and other digital devices using their thoughts.
