Bread becomes expensive in West Bengal.

West Bengal Bread Price News: If you start your day with tea and bread, this news could hit your pocket harder than ever. Bread prices in West Bengal have recently been hit hard by inflation. Citing rising raw material costs, the West Bengal Bakers Association has approved an increase in the price of a pound of bread.

According to the Bakers Association, the costs associated with flour, sugar, and packaging are constantly increasing. Consequently, it became difficult for bakeries to maintain the old prices for long. Therefore, the new bread prices have been implemented effective August 17, 2026. This could impact the monthly budget of those who buy bread daily. Let's learn more about the new bread prices...

What is the new price of bread?

According to Ariful Islam, CEO of the West Bengal Bakers Association, the decision to increase prices was made at an executive committee meeting on August 8. It was implemented on August 17. The price of one pound (approximately 450 grams) of bread, which was previously priced at 32 rupees, has now been increased to 36 rupees.

Bakers say they tried to hold off on price increases for some time, but the continued rise in costs made it difficult to do so. Approximately 3,000 bakeries in the state will be affected by this change. However, retailers have been given 15 days to adjust their sales to the new prices.

What is the reason for the increase in the price of bread?

In fact, the price of raw materials used in bread-making has been steadily increasing, which has directly impacted the bakery business. It is reported that the price of flour has increased by approximately 600 rupees per quintal in the past month. Furthermore, the price of sugar has also increased from approximately 40 rupees to 60 rupees per kilogram.

Additionally, rising petroleum prices have led to increased packaging and other costs. Consequently, these costs are now being reflected in the price of bread.

The price of sliced bread has already increased.

This increase in bread prices comes at a time when many organized bread brands have already raised their prices. However, in many locations, the price of sliced bread has been increased by approximately 4 rupees per pound, taking the price from approximately 36 rupees to 40 rupees per pound. According to the association, retailers have been asked to sell bread at the new price, while also offering distributors a discount of up to 22%.
