Big change for those buying a new SIM: biometric verification required

If you're getting a new SIM, KYC documents alone won't be valid. Biometric verification will also be required to verify the user's identity.

Biometric verification is required for new SIM cards.

Getting a new SIM card will no longer be as easy as before. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued new rules regarding user identification. Biometric verification will now be required for new SIM connections, meaning simply providing KYC documents will no longer be sufficient. According to the new rules, users' identities will also be verified biometrically. This could include fingerprints, facial features, or iris information.

Not just new SIMs, the rules aren't limited to just getting a new connection. Biometric verification will also be required when updating user information, deactivating a SIM, and re-verifying identity. The government says this will help prevent SIMs obtained in fake names and used under false identities.

The government changed the rules for this

Today, mobile numbers aren't just for calls or internet access. They're also used for banking, UPI, and many other digital services. Therefore, accurately identifying the person in whose name a mobile connection is registered becomes crucial. The new rules will further strengthen the process of verifying identity, from purchasing a SIM card to changing user information and re-verifying.

You will not be able to keep SIM cards beyond the prescribed limit

Additionally, the Department of Telecommunications has set a limit on mobile connections. According to the new rules, telecom companies will be required to identify customers who have more mobile connections than the new limit. According to information, a single person can have a maximum of nine mobile connections in their name. In Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and the Northeast service area, this limit is six SIMs. If a customer has more mobile connections in their name than this limit, they will be required to deactivate the additional numbers.
