Bank Changes ATM Rules: Free Transactions Cut to 5, Cash Withdrawal Charges Rise From September 1

Canara Bank customers should take note of revised ATM transaction rules that came into effect on September 1, 2026. The public sector bank has changed the number of free ATM transactions available to regular savings account customers and revised certain charges applicable after the free monthly limit is exhausted.
One of the biggest changes is a reduction in the monthly free ATM transaction allowance for savings account holders. Customers will now get five free transactions per month instead of six. The limit covers both financial and non-financial transactions.
Senior citizens, however, have not been affected by this particular revision. They will continue to receive eight free ATM transactions under the applicable rules.
The bank has also increased charges for cash withdrawals beyond the free limit and for certain failed ATM transactions caused by insufficient account balance. At the same time, the fee for regenerating a Green PIN after exhausting the free transaction allowance has been substantially reduced.
Here is what Canara Bank ATM card users need to know about the new rules.
Free ATM Transaction Limit Reduced From 6 to 5
Under the revised structure effective September 1, regular Canara Bank savings account customers will be allowed five free ATM transactions every month.
Previously, the monthly allowance was six transactions.
Importantly, the free limit is not restricted only to cash withdrawals. Both financial and non-financial ATM transactions are counted under the applicable free transaction allowance.
This means customers who frequently use ATMs for different services should keep track of their monthly usage.
Once the free transaction allowance has been exhausted, applicable service charges can be levied on subsequent transactions.
No Change in Free ATM Limit for Senior Citizens
The revised rules provide relief to senior citizen customers.
While the free monthly transaction allowance for regular savings account holders has been reduced, the limit available to senior citizens remains unchanged.
Senior citizens will continue to get eight free ATM transactions per month under the applicable structure.
Therefore, the reduction from six to five transactions does not apply to this category of customers.
Cash Withdrawal Charge Increased to ₹23
Customers who exceed their free transaction allowance will now have to pay more for withdrawing cash from a Canara Bank ATM.
The charge for an ATM cash withdrawal after the applicable free limit has been increased from ₹20 to ₹23 per transaction.
GST will be charged separately as applicable.
This means the customer's actual debit can be higher than ₹23 once the applicable tax is included.
The revised charge also covers eligible UPI-based cash withdrawals at ATMs, according to the information provided by the bank.
For customers who regularly rely on ATMs for small cash withdrawals, keeping track of the free monthly limit could therefore help avoid repeated charges.
What Happens After the Free ATM Limit Is Exhausted?
After customers use all the free transactions available for the month, applicable service charges will begin to apply to transactions performed through Canara Bank ATMs and cash recycler machines.
However, there is an important exception.
The revised service charge does not apply to cash-deposit transactions under the provision described by the bank.
Customers using cash recycler machines should therefore distinguish between cash withdrawals and deposits when considering the applicable transaction charges.
Insufficient Balance ATM Failure Will Also Cost More
Another significant change concerns ATM transactions that fail because there is not enough money in the customer's account.
After the free transaction allowance has been exhausted, the charge applicable to such transactions has been increased from ₹17 to ₹23.
GST will be additional.
The revised charge applies to qualifying insufficient-balance transactions made through both Canara Bank ATMs and ATMs operated by other banks.
Customers should therefore check their available balance before attempting a withdrawal, particularly after using up their monthly free ATM transactions.
Green PIN Regeneration Becomes Much Cheaper
Not every change means higher charges.
Canara Bank has sharply reduced the fee for regenerating a Green PIN after the free transaction limit has been exhausted.
The applicable charge has been cut from ₹23 to ₹5.
This revised fee applies to several card variants, including:
- Classic
- Standard
- Platinum
- Business
- Select
- World
This is a substantial reduction compared with the earlier charge.
Canara Bank ATM Charges: Old vs New
| ATM Service | Earlier Rule/Charge | Revised Rule/Charge |
|---|---|---|
| Free transactions for regular savings customers | 6 per month | 5 per month |
| Free transactions for senior citizens | 8 per month | 8 per month |
| Cash withdrawal beyond free limit | ₹20 | ₹23 + GST |
| Insufficient-balance transaction after free limit | ₹17 | ₹23 + GST |
| Green PIN regeneration after free limit | ₹23 | ₹5 |
Customers should remember that eligibility, account category, ATM type and other applicable banking conditions can affect how charges are applied.
Financial and Non-Financial Transactions Both Matter
ATM usage is not limited to withdrawing cash.
Depending on the ATM and available services, customers may use the machine for several other functions.
Because both financial and non-financial transactions are included in the free transaction framework described by the bank, customers who frequently use an ATM for multiple purposes may reach their monthly allowance sooner than expected.
It can therefore be useful to perform routine banking activities through mobile or internet banking whenever those services are available and suitable.
How Customers Can Avoid Unnecessary ATM Charges
The new structure makes it more important for customers to manage ATM usage efficiently.
Instead of making several small cash withdrawals throughout the month, customers who are comfortable doing so may plan withdrawals more carefully.
Balance checks and other basic account-related activities can often be completed through mobile banking or internet banking without visiting an ATM.
Customers should also check the available balance before initiating a cash withdrawal. This becomes particularly important after the free transaction limit has been crossed because an unsuccessful transaction caused by insufficient balance may attract the revised fee under the applicable conditions.
Are Cash Deposits Also Charged?
The revised service-charge provision described for transactions beyond the free limit does not apply to cash deposits.
This can be relevant for customers using Canara Bank's cash recycler machines.
However, banking charges and service conditions can vary depending on the type of account and transaction. Customers should check the bank's latest official schedule of charges if they regularly use cash-deposit facilities.
When Did the New Canara Bank ATM Rules Start?
The revised ATM rules became effective from September 1, 2026.
Customers should therefore consider the new transaction limit and applicable fees while using ATMs from September onward.
The changes primarily affect regular savings account customers who frequently cross their monthly free ATM transaction allowance.
What Has Not Changed?
The most notable exception to the reduction in free transactions is for senior citizens.
Their monthly allowance remains at eight free transactions.
The revision also does not mean that every ATM withdrawal will automatically cost ₹23.
The higher withdrawal fee becomes relevant after the applicable free transaction allowance has been exhausted, subject to the bank's terms and conditions.
This distinction is important because headlines about higher ATM charges can sometimes create the impression that customers must pay for every cash withdrawal.
Why Customers Should Monitor Their ATM Usage
An additional charge of a few rupees may appear small when viewed as a single transaction, but frequent ATM users can end up paying repeatedly if they regularly cross the free monthly limit.
For example, a customer making several withdrawals after exhausting the free allowance could incur the applicable charge on each qualifying transaction, along with GST.
Using digital banking for activities that do not require cash can help reduce unnecessary ATM visits.
The Bottom Line
Canara Bank's revised ATM transaction rules are effective from September 1, 2026, and regular savings account customers should pay particular attention to the reduced free monthly allowance.
The number of free ATM transactions for these customers has been cut from six to five per month, while senior citizens continue to receive eight.
After the free limit is exhausted, the applicable cash withdrawal charge at Canara Bank ATMs has increased from ₹20 to ₹23 plus GST. The charge for qualifying ATM transactions that fail because of insufficient balance has also increased from ₹17 to ₹23 plus GST.
On the positive side, the fee for regenerating a Green PIN after the free limit has been reduced sharply from ₹23 to ₹5 for specified card variants.
Customers who regularly use ATMs should keep track of their monthly transaction count, check their available balance before attempting a withdrawal and use digital banking for suitable non-cash activities to minimise avoidable charges.
Disclaimer: Banking fees and transaction conditions may be revised from time to time and can vary depending on account type, card category and transaction circumstances. Customers should check Canara Bank's latest official schedule of charges for the rules applicable to their account.
