Bangladesh Premier League has been called off!
The Bangladesh Premier League has been suspended. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has made the significant decision, announcing that the country's premier cricket league, the BPL, will not be held this year. Board president Tamim Iqbal stated that the league will be revived in a restructured manner. The main reason behind this significant decision by the BCB is the ongoing financial losses.
Bangladesh Cricket Board President Tamim Iqbal announced that the BPL will not be held this year. He stated that the league will only be resumed after internal issues are resolved. Tamim also revealed that the board has incurred a loss of $3.3 million due to the Bangladesh Premier League over the past two years, equivalent to approximately ₹315 crore (approximately ₹315 million).
Former cricketer and BCB president Tamim Iqbal revealed, "The BPL is a great tournament and people have loved it a lot. If we can organize it properly, the interest in it will increase even more. Franchise cricket should be profitable for the board, not a loss. Therefore, it is not wrong to suspend a tournament at a loss until we resolve the problems."
The Bangladesh Premier League has been mired in controversy. In May of this year, the BCB suspended a player and team officials after the Anti-Corruption Unit found them involved in betting. Tamim Iqbal says efforts will be made to get the league back on track. He will strive to restart the BPL as soon as possible.
Started in 2012
The Bangladesh Premier League began in 2012. Over the past 15 years, 12 seasons of the BPL have been played. The BPL was not held in 2014 due to the political crisis, while the 2020 and 2021 seasons were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The most successful BPL team is the Comilla Victorians, having won the title four times. Dhaka Gladiators, Rajshahi Warriors, and Fortune Barishal have each won the trophy twice.
Tamim Iqbal, now the president of the BCB, holds the record for most runs in the BPL. He scored 3,835 runs in 118 matches, including two centuries and 32 fifties.
