In the case of Amazon Prime Video showing advertisements before the expiry of the plan in Hyderabad, the Commission ordered the company to refund around Rs 1,499 to the customer, Rs 5,000 as compensation, and Rs 3,000 in legal expenses.

Amazon Prime Video also ran ads for a 1499 subscription; the man who approached the court received 9499.
Nowadays, people use OTT platforms to watch movies and web series. Many customers even purchase annual subscriptions to watch videos without ads. If advertisements continue to appear even after paying, it's natural to feel frustrated. A similar case occurred in Hyderabad, where the Consumer Commission ordered Amazon to pay a total of 9,499 based on a customer's complaint.
Customer Rajesh stated that the service he paid for was changed mid-service. He contacted Amazon customer support and requested the removal of the ads or a full refund of the subscription fee. However, according to his complaint, instead of a full refund, he was only offered a refund for the remaining period. The customer subsequently approached the Consumer Protection Commission, seeking a full refund of the subscription amount, compensation for mental distress, and legal expenses.
Advertisements appear even after purchasing the annual plan of Rs 1,499
According to media reports, Hyderabad resident Kondhoba Rajesh purchased an annual Amazon Prime subscription for ₹1,499 on May 11, 2025. The customer stated that this plan allowed him to watch ad-free videos on his mobile, TV, and laptop for a year.
However, they alleged that advertisements began appearing on Prime Video from June 17, 2025, even before the annual plan expired. They were then asked to pay an additional ₹699 to watch videos without advertisements.
How much money will Amazon have to pay?
The Commission has ordered Amazon to make three payments in response to the customer's complaint:
- Rs 1,499 – To get the full refund of the annual subscription amount.
- 5 thousand – as compensation to the customer.
- 3 thousand – for legal expenses.
The company will have to pay a total of ₹9,499, and the Commission has given it 45 days to comply with the order. This case is important regarding the features available when purchasing online subscriptions and the responsibility of companies.
What did the Consumer Commission say?
The Hyderabad District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission-I passed its order in this case on October 1, 2026. The Commission found that advertisements were shown before the end of the customer's annual plan period and additional charges were levied for viewing without advertisements.
According to the Commission, the company failed to prove that customers were clearly informed at the time of purchase that advertisements might appear mid-stream and that they would have to pay separately to remove them.
