AI rabbits set out to catch pythons in the forest, how do they hunt?

In Florida, artificial robotic rabbits have been created to catch pythons, which attract them with heat and smell and immediately send information to the authorities.

In this, common people and experts work together to catch large pythons from the Everglades area. The one who catches the most or the longest pythons gets a prize. But now this competition alone is not enough. Therefore, the officials have devised a new and strange way to find pythons. Last year, the South Florida Water Management District thought of something new. They created solar-powered robot rabbits. These look exactly like real rabbits. They are equipped with AI, a heat-releasing system, and even emit a rabbit-like smell, so that the pythons think they are real and come near them.

How do robotic rabbits work?

These robots run on solar energy. They emit heat and a scent that deceives the pythons and forces them to come closer. Each robot is equipped with a camera that monitors the surroundings. Whenever a python approaches, the camera immediately alerts the team. The team then arrives and captures the python. These robots are placed in areas where pythons often hide. This allows them to monitor areas that are inaccessible to humans.

Why is Florida removing pythons?

Burmese pythons were introduced to the Florida forests many years ago. They have now become the biggest threat to the region. It is estimated that there are between 100,000 and 300,000 pythons in the Everglades. A female python can lay over 70 eggs at a time. These pythons can grow up to 18 feet long. They consume native animals, birds, and small creatures. This has led to a shortage of food for animals like the Florida panther and bobcat. According to an old report, animals like raccoons and opossums have nearly disappeared from some areas of the Everglades, with these pythons cited as the primary cause.

  • Before the arrival of the robot rabbit, Florida relied only on trend teams and the Python Challenge.
  • This year, more than 600 people registered for the competition, and ultimately more than 900 people participated.
  • More than 19,000 Burmese pythons have been removed since 2000. Officials say the robot rabbits will not replace the entire operation, but rather enhance it.
