After Rohit and Virat, Angelo Mathews Bids Adieu to Test Cricket — A Golden Era Ends

Just days after Indian cricket legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli shocked fans by retiring from Test cricket, another giant of the modern game has followed suit. Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews has officially announced his retirement from the longest format, marking the end of an illustrious chapter in Sri Lanka’s cricket history.

Angelo Mathews’ Stellar Test Career

Debuting in 2009 against Pakistan in Galle, Mathews carved out a reputation as one of Sri Lanka’s most dependable and versatile players. Over a 16-year Test career, he compiled a legacy of consistency and leadership.

  • Matches: 118
  • Runs: 8,167
  • Average: 44.63
  • Centuries/Half-Centuries: 16/45
  • Highest Score: 200
  • Wickets: 33

He finishes his red-ball career as Sri Lanka’s third-highest run-scorer in Tests, behind only greats Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.

Emotional Goodbye

In a heartfelt message posted on May 23, 2025, Mathews shared:

"It’s time to say goodbye to the most beloved format of the game. Playing cricket for Sri Lanka for the last 17 years has been the highest honor and pride for me. I’ve given my all to cricket and in return, cricket has given me everything."

He confirmed that his final Test appearance will be the upcoming match against Bangladesh in June.

Focus on White-Ball Cricket

While stepping away from Tests, Mathews is not retiring from international cricket entirely. He will continue to represent Sri Lanka in ODIs and T20s, offering his experience and leadership in crucial white-ball formats.

"I will be available for white-ball selection whenever my country needs me... It’s time to make way for a younger player to shine."

A Transitional Time for Cricket

Mathews’ retirement closely follows those of Rohit and Kohli—highlighting a major generational shift in world cricket. With the departure of these icons, a new wave of young talent is expected to take center stage.
