The Indian government is constantly experimenting with alternatives to petrol and diesel. Now, another step is being taken toward blending biofuels with diesel. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari provided important information in this regard. He stated that tests are underway to explore the possibility of blending 15 percent isobutanol with diesel.

According to Gadkari, India spends approximately ₹22 lakh crore annually on fossil fuel imports. The government wants to increase the use of domestically produced alternative fuels to reduce import costs. Promoting biofuels is part of this strategy.

Testing of 15% isobutanol blending in diesel

Speaking at an event in New Delhi on Wednesday, Nitin Gadkari stated that testing is currently underway to blend 15 percent isobutanol with diesel. The purpose of these tests is to determine the effectiveness and usefulness of this blend. He added that the Petroleum Ministry will make further decisions based on the results of the tests.

Through this scheme, the government aims to promote the use of biofuels in the country, reduce India's dependence on crude oil imports, and control vehicular pollution.

BS7 norms may be implemented from 2029

Gadkari also provided information on the upcoming Bharat Stage-7 (BS7) emission regulations. The Ministry of Road Transport has proposed implementing these in three phases starting in 2029. However, the automobile industry body SIAM wants these regulations to be implemented in a phased manner starting in 2032. The new regulations will tighten regulations on vehicle emissions, as well as emissions from tires and brakes, with the aim of reducing air pollution.

There was also discussion about E20 petrol.

The tests of the new diesel fuel come at a time when motorists have raised questions about the E20 program, which blends 20 percent ethanol into gasoline. Some have complained of reduced fuel mileage and engine problems.

However, Gadkari dismissed these claims, stating that no vehicle has been reported to have been damaged by E20 petrol. He pointed out that companies like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Hyundai have developed E20-compatible vehicle models.
