Ravan Dahan 2025: Ravana Dahan will be held on Vijayadashami, October 2nd. Nowadays, effigies of Ravana and candles are available in markets and supermarkets. People often wonder, Can we burn them at home?

Ravan Dahan 2025: After Navratri, the effigy of Ravana is burned on the tenth day of the bright fortnight of the Ashwin month. This day is also known by names like Ravana Dahan, Vijayadashami, and Dussehra. This year, Ravana Dahan will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2025. The tradition of Ravana Dahan has been going on for years.
The festival of Ravana Dahan is celebrated to symbolize the establishment of Dharma after the end of Adharma and the victory of good over evil. Lord Rama established Dharma by killing Ravana. Therefore, every year, people burn Ravana on the tenth day. Usually, Ravana Dahan is performed on a large scale in a city, village, or town at a specific location, such as a field, public place, or intersection, where a large number of people are present.
These days, large and small effigies of Ravana are available in the market. Even in supermarkets, Ravana candles are available. So, can we burn these things at home? Is it possible to burn Ravana at home, or are there any drawbacks? This question arises in many people's minds. Let's find out what the reward is.
Can Ravana Dahan be performed at home?
From a religious perspective, the scriptures do not explicitly prohibit burning Ravana at home. Ravana Dahan is performed in public places or open grounds for safety reasons. One reason for burning Ravana in open and large spaces is to ensure that as many people as possible can attend and witness it. Although the scriptures do not mention burning Ravana in the home or courtyard, it cannot be considered directly prohibited either.
Is it a bad omen to burn Ravana at home?
You can make a small effigy of Ravana or buy one from the market and burn it symbolically. There is no harm or bad omen in this. However, there are certain procedures for burning a large effigy, so burning it at home is not auspicious. Furthermore, burning a large effigy at home is also not advisable from a health and safety perspective.
Also, keep in mind that if you are burning a small effigy of Ravana or anything symbolic like a Ravana candle at home, sprinkle Ganga water around the house and light a lamp afterward. This does not cause any harm.
If you do not burn the effigy of Ravana on Dussehra or are unable to participate in any public place where Ravana is being burnt, then you can make the festival of Vijayadashami auspicious by lighting a lamp, reciting the Ramayana, or reciting the Hanuman Chalisa on this day.
