WhatsApp Privacy: Meta's troubles appear to be mounting once again in the US. The company's popular messaging platform, WhatsApp, has been accused of misleading users about their privacy and security. According to reports, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against Meta and WhatsApp. The allegation is that the company misled users into believing that their chats were completely secure and end-to-end encrypted, when the reality may be different.

Questions raised on end-to-end encryption

The lawsuit claims that WhatsApp has long touted its platform as highly secure, saying that only the sender and receiver can read users' messages.

But the Texas administration alleges that Meta had access to vast amounts of private communications data. The case also alleges that the company promised strong privacy protections to its billions of users but failed to fully live up to those promises.

Whistleblower reports also mentioned

The legal documents also cite reports and whistleblower claims alleging that Meta gained access to some WhatsApp messages that were not fully encrypted. However, Meta has denied all these allegations. Company spokesperson Andy Stone stated that WhatsApp cannot read or access users' encrypted messages and that the lawsuit is based on completely false facts.

Growing concern across the world including India

This incident comes at a time when pressure is mounting on major tech companies worldwide regarding user data and privacy. In countries like India, WhatsApp has become a part of the daily lives of millions of people. People use it for personal communication, business, and even digital payments. These allegations are raising new concerns among users about the extent of data tech companies collect behind the scenes.

The Texas government demanded strict action.

The Texas government has asked the court to prevent Meta and WhatsApp from accessing users' messages without their permission. It has also sought financial penalties against the companies. This isn't the first time a major tech company has faced privacy-related allegations. Previously, the Texas administration has taken legal action against Google over user data and privacy issues.

There is also pressure on Meta regarding the mental health of children.

Meanwhile, Meta has also reached a settlement in another lawsuit filed by a school district in Kentucky, USA. That case alleged that social media companies were fueling mental health crises among children and adolescents. The case is reportedly set to go to trial in California next month. YouTube, Snap, and TikTok have previously reached settlements in similar cases.
